Knoxville, TN (December 30, 2017) Mark Pitaccio scored the eventual game-winner at 15:10 of the second and goaltender Jonah Imoo did the rest for Evansville as the Thunderbolts beat the Ice Bears 2-1 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum on Saturday night.

The loss snaps Knoxville’s four-game win streak. Evansville halts a two-game skid and ties the season series between these two teams at two wins apiece. The Ice Bears and Thunderbolts will meet three more times this year.

Mike Fazio struck first for Evansville when a shot by Lee Christensen was stopped by Zoltan Hetenyi and the rebound was poked in at 13:07 of the first. Elliot Grauer’s wrister from the slot at 13:26 of the second tied the game for Knoxville.

Pitaccio’s game-winner came when a clearing attempt deflected off the left side glass and skipped past a Knoxville defender. Pitaccio took the puck in stride on a breakaway, deked by Hetenyi and slid a backhand into the net at 15:10.

Knoxville threw a flurry of shots at Imoo, but Evansville’s netminder stood tall making 24 saves. Mike Chen had the closest chance at an equalizer for the Ice Bears, but his wrist shot from the high slot late in the third period smacked off the crossbar.

It’s the first time in eight games this season Knoxville has lost when outshooting its opponent. The Ice Bears travel to Roanoke on Sunday to take on the Rail Yard Dawgs and will return home for their first game of the new year on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, for Taco Tuesday.  Puck drop is at 7 pm – for tickets visit www.ticketmaster.com.
