Ice Bears Finish Regular Season in Thrilling Fashion

Knoxville, TN (April 7, 2018) Ice Bears rally, defeat Ice Flyers in shootout Sean Robertson scored the game-winning goal in the ninth round of the shootout and the Knoxville Ice Bears erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Pensacola Ice Flyers 4-3 on Saturday if front of ruckus crowd of 4,516 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

The win gives the Ice Bears a fifth place finish to close out the regular season. Knoxville will know its first round playoff opponent Sunday night via the Challenge Round Selection Show.

Down 3-1 in the third, Gehrett Sargis scored from the high slot at 12:25 and Evan Neugold scored less than two minutes later to tie the game.

Liam Kerins scored both goals for Pensacola in the shootout. Danny Cesarz scored for Knoxville and Neugold scored in the sixth round to keep the Ice Bears alive. Robertson skated in up the middle and beat Alex Sakellaropoulos’ glove to win it for Knoxville.

Pensacola jumped out to the lead with Jessyko Bernard’s top shelf wrister from the right circle at 7:48 of the first. Knoxville pulled even on the power play when Lawrence Cornellier fed Marcus Ortiz in front of the crease for a one-timer that slipped past Sakellaropoulos at 11:25.

Chapen LeBlond pushed the Ice Flyers out in front again when his shot hit the post and bounced in off the back of Zoltan Hetenyi just 1:31 into the second. T.J. Sarcona intercepted a pass in the Knoxville zone and scored to give Pensacola a 3-1 lead with 10:47 remaining.

The Knoxville Ice Bears who have clinched a playoff spot for the 16th consecutive year will host the team’s official watch party for the SPHL Challenge Round Selection Show will be at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, April 8 at Knoxville Civic Coliseum.  The event is free to attend, but space is limited.  You can watch the action live on www.thesphl.com and on the Knoxville Ice Bears Facebook page.
