Bears Bring in New Trainer

09/12/2018 1:00 PM -

Knoxville, TENN. (12 September 2018) - The Knoxville Ice Bears announced Wednesday the hiring of a new athletic trainer, Ryan Murphy.

Murphy, from Erie, Pennsylvania, received a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Athletic Training degree from Gannon University, in Erie, gaining clinical experiences with Division II football, men’s soccer, and water polo, among others.  He specializes in strength and conditioning (CSCS) and is Técnica Gavilán IASTM certified.

Head Coach Jeff Carr said, of his new ATC, “We’re excited to have Ryan come into the room, this season. He’s qualified, hard-working, and eager to make a difference as part of our team – can’t wait to have him with us.”

Ryan spent the last two years working as an athletic training intern at Southern Wesleyan University (DII), in South Carolina. His major responsibilities were baseball, men’s & women’s soccer, and basketball, but he shared the medical training responsibilities for eighteen total sports. Hockey has been a part of his life since childhood and currently plays adult hockey at Cool Sports.

Along with his responsibilities with the Ice Bears, Murphy also serves as the Knoxville Community Outreach Athletic Trainer, through Benchmark Physical Therapy.

Ryan Murphy joins the Ice Bears in the footsteps of his Benchmark Physical Therapy colleague, Andy Clark. Clark began serving as the Ice Bears head athletic trainer in 2013, one year before the 2014-2015 SPHL President’s Cup Championship season.

“Andy is an incredibly talented, dedicated worker and he will surely be missed, throughout the organization.” Carr said of his outgoing trainer.

Murphy’s first activity on the job will come during the Ice Bears upcoming Free Agent Camp, October 5th and 6th. The Ice Bears regular season begins October 19th, as Knoxville pursues their 5th SPHL Championship title.
