Weekend Sweep

01/26/2019 10:40 PM -

Knoxville, TN (January 26, 2019) Bryce Nielsen had two goals, including the eventual game winner and the Knoxville Ice Bears beat the Quad City Storm 4-3 at the Civic Coliseum Saturday night.

Marcus Ortiz and Lucas Bombardier also scored for Knoxville. Danny Cesarz had three assists and Jason Pawloski made 30 saves.

Shane Bennett, Austin Hervey and Sean Kacerosky scored for Quad City, which has lost five straight.

Nielsen’s game winning goal came off a one-timer in front of the crease when Cesarz found him from the left goal line to make it 4-2 with 4:34 remaining. Kacerosky scored 37 seconds later to bring the Storm within one, but Quad City never got closer.

Nielsen pushed the puck through a crowd in the crease after Ryan Mulder let a rebound get away from him causing a scramble for the puck to ensue. Nielsen eventually managed to force the puck across the goal line to give the Ice Bears a 1-0 lead at 5:54 of the first.

The Ice Bears added to the lead when David Brancik’s shot from the left side was stopped by Mulder, but the rebound squirted out to the right of the crease and Ortiz buried it at 2:22 of the second.

Bombardier beat Mulder on a power play to put Knoxville ahead 3-1 at 12:10 of the third. Hervey scored 75 seconds later to cut the deficit for the second time.

Quad City had a couple chances in the final minute to potentially force overtime, but Knoxville got some key blocks in the slot and Pawloski stopped a shot from the left circle with ten seconds remaining before the Ice Bears cleared the puck to end any hopes of a comeback.

Knoxville will stay home and host Fayetteville for the front end of a home-and-home on Friday.
