Ice Bears Edge Marksmen 3-2

02/08/2019 6:38 PM -

Knoxville, TN (February 8, 2019) Anthony McVeigh scored the game winning goal with 4:10 remaining and the Knoxville Ice Bears held on to beat the Fayetteville Marksmen 3-2 at the Civic Coliseum on Friday night.

Newcomer Roberts Locans and Bryce Nielsen also scored for the Ice Bears. Stanislav Dzakov and Spencer Metcalfe both had two assists. Hayden Stewart finished with 28 saves.

After Metcalfe’s shot from the left point was stopped by Dillon Kelley, McVeigh corralled the puck and slipped it into the net to put Knoxville ahead for good.

Locans opened the scoring when he carried the puck across into the high slot and used a quick release to beat Kelley at 9:27 of the first. Locans, who was just signed yesterday, spent four games in Roanoke and 12 games in the ECHL with Norfolk earlier this season.

Both teams had opportunities to add to the scoring in the second period. Darren McCormick got loose on a breakaway for Fayetteville, but his backhand hit the outside of the post. Dzakhov had a chance to increase Knoxville’s lead, but his wrist shot from the slot sailed high.

Fayetteville had two takeaways in the Knoxville slot off passes from behind the net that turned into scoring chances, but Tyler Palmer’s turnaround shot was tipped over the crossbar by Hayden Stewart and Max Cook’s wrister went wide left, leaving Knoxville in front heading into the second intermission.

The Marksmen tied the game early in the third with a one-timer by Taylor McCloy at 3:26. Nielsen’s goal put Knoxville back on top before Max Cook scored from the right hash to tie the game again.

The two teams meet again Saturday night at the Civic Coliseum to complete a four-game series over the past two weekends.  Limited tickets remain for Saturday’s Star Wars themed game.  To purchase tickets visit www.ticketmaster.com
