Knoxville, TN (February 11, 2017) Frank Schumacher had a goal and an assist, Tanner Milliron made 34 saves and the Evansville Thunderbolts defeated the Knoxville Ice Bears 4-1 Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 5,230 at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. The Ice Bears have now lost seven straight. Evansville snapped a three-game skid with the win.
Mark Pustin slid the puck to Doug Reid at the left point, who weaved his way through the left circle. Reid’s wrist shot was blocked by Milliron, but Trever Hertz scored off the rebound from the hash to make it 1-0 Ice Bears at 4:54 of the first.
Evansville knotted up the score later in the period when Frank Schumacher’s shot from the left circle beat Dylan Wells at 14:38. A tie up in the slot lead to Robbie Donahue colliding with Wells and preventing him from making a play on the shot.
Dave Williams gave the Thunderbolts the lead three minutes into the second period when he took the puck from the blue line, worked his way around Jake Flegel behind the net and beat Wells on a wraparound try. Evansville thought it had extended the lead to 3-1 on a power play goal with nine seconds remaining in the second, but the goal was waived off due to Wells being interfered.
Evansville iced the game with 1:57 remaining when Tommy Fiorintino drove in tight with a wrister that was stopped by Wells, only to collect his own rebound and score. Josh Elmes tallied an empty-netter with 1:03 remaining.
The Knoxville Ice Bears play four games on the road starting with Tuesday 2/14 in Huntsville and end with a three-game series with Peoria on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All games are available on www.sphllive.com and next weekend’s game will be available at Fieldhouse Social as part of the Thunder Road Away Game Viewing Party.
