Holiday games and promotions
date: 12/23/2008December 23, 2008 – The Knoxville Ice Bears will play two home games this week, which will provide great entertainment for all ages.
Throughout the years the Second Harvest Food Bank has been assisted by individuals from all walks of life. This may be the first time, though, that its assistance comes from a group of Bears and a Sponge!
Second Harvest will be the beneficiaries of donations made at Friday’s Ice Bears hockey game versus Richmond. Fans who attend the December 26th game will not only get to see the Knoxville Ice Bears take on the Renegades, they will also get to meet the animated celebrity Sponge Bob Square Pants.
As all youngsters know that Sponge Bob lives in a pineapple under the sea, the Ice Bears ask that each patron bring a can of pineapple, which will be which will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. As a gesture of thanks, the Ice Bears will reward the donors with a “buy one get one free” ticket voucher for a future game.
“We want everyone to have a great time watching the Ice Bears in top-notch action,” said general manager Mike Murray, “but at the same time have some fun in helping a great charity like Second Harvest. “Bringing cans of pineapple not only helps the Food Bank, it also keeps with a fun theme as we have Sponge Bob in house!”
Fans are also encourages to visit the GutterGuardian table that will be located in the lobby of the Knoxville Civic Coliseum on Friday night to receive their FREE Child ID Kit. There will also be a Sponge Bob inflatable located in the Exhibition Hall for the enjoyment of the young fans. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m., and this night is sponsored by B97.5.
The course of a tough hockey season will see plenty of gauze wrappings and Band Aids being used among the Ice Bear players. However, Saturday December 27th’s game will prove a bit different - instead of being the recipient of Band Aids, the Ice Bears want to help medical clinics receive much-needed supplies through a one-night campaign. Patrons are urged to come out for Healthcare Night and bring a box of Band Aids to donate to “Band with Tennessee.”
“Band With Tennessee” is a service project that was created by University of Tennessee freshman Ashton Doane. Her goal is to continue and expand a local drive to collect boxes of band aids for medical clinics in underprivileged countries. A side benefit of Ashton’s mission is to educate University of Tennessee students about the importance of volunteerism. For almost two months Ashton has been collecting boxes of Band Aids, and the Ice Bears have stepped in to assist in this wide-scale project.
Saturday’s game against the Fayetteville FireAntz has been dedicated as Healthcare Night, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of “Band with Tennessee.” Band Aids are inexpensive, yet a much-needed medical supply for numerous health clinics, so all fans are urged to bring at least one box to help in this important undertaking. The charity Samaritans Purse, located in North Carolina, has agreed to pay for the distribution of the band aid boxes to go overseas.
Besides the goodwill shown before the puck drops at 7:30, attendees will also enjoy the intermission’s annual Hospital Bed Races, sponsored by ESPN Radio. Moreover, all healthcare professional can call 525-PUCK to receive group ticket discounts.
